Jackson's Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 recently named its band students of the month for the past six months.
Named band student of the month for the months of December through May were Lisa Schmid, Kristin Swinford, Julia Schmid, Ryan Harper, Sarah Fluegge and Kelly Fronabarger, respectively.
In addition to being a member of Jackson High School's marching band and symphonic band, Schmid was a member of Spanish Club, served as a peer tutor and took part in FBLA, girls' choir, JAM, Drama Club, Youth Experiencing Success Club, Just Say No, Junior Rotarians, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Pep Club and National Honor Society.
Schmid also served as a secretary/treasurer of the band during her junior year and held offices in other organizations as well.
The December band student is a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson and plans to attend Southwest Baptist University and study psychology and music. Schmid is the daughter of Tom and Kathy Schmid.
Kristin Swinford, the daughter of Ken and Lisa Swinford is January's band student of the month.
She is a member of the Pep Club, student council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, High Step, National Honor Society, the chamber choir and the choir council.
During her junior year, Swinford was class secretary.
Swinford is a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and plans to attend college following graduation.
Julia Schmid was named February's band student of the month. She is the daughter of Tom and Kathy Schmid.
The February band student is a member of the marching band and symphonic band as well as the chamber choir.
In addition, Schmid has participated in High Step, Drama Club, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Pep Club, FBLA, Junior Rotarians, Just Say No, National Honor Society, Youth Experiencing Success and the Jackson Drug Free Advisory Council.
She is a past secretary and treasurer of the band.
Schmid attends the First Baptist Church of Jackson and plans to attend Southwest Baptist Church following graduation.
The band student for the month of March is Ryan Harper. he is the 17-year-old son of Paul and Pam Harper.
In addition to the marching, jazz and symphonic bands, Harper has been involved in student council as an officer, the high school baseball team and the Silver Arrow yearbook staff.
His band activities have earned him all-district and all-state honors.
He plans to attend college and study music or English.
Honored as April's band student of the month is Sarah Fluegge.
The daughter of Cheryl Reinagel of Jackson, Fluegge is involved in marching and symphonic band and was named to the district band.
She is a member of French Club, Quill and Scroll and Drama Club and served as graphics and features editor for the school newspaper during the past year.
Fluegge is also a member of the Southeast Missouri Wind Ensemble and has taken part in district and state music festivals.
The band student is a member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Cape and plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University.
Kelly Fronabarger has been named May's band student of the month.
Fronabarger is the daughter of Glenn and Marilyn Fronabarger.
She has been a member of the marching and symphonic bands as well as the chamber choir.
The 17-year-old is a member of the New McKendree United Methodist Church. She plans to attend college and major in secondary education with an emphasis in history.
