More than 42 asphalt streets will receive repairs next month as part of the city of Jackson's annual Asphalt Pavement Improvement Plan.

City officials awarded the $180,044 contract to Jokerst Inc. of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, during a Board of Aldermen meeting Monday night.

The program is one of three annual road improvement projects, including the city's concrete improvement and joint routing and sealing projects, said public works director Rodney Bollinger.

Although various streets all over Jackson will be repaired, the bulk of the work will be in the central and west-end parts of town.

"Quite honestly, that's one of the older parts of town," Bollinger said. "That's where most of the asphalt streets are located."

The repairs will involve road closures, but Bollinger said the schedule will have to be approved by city officials before projects begin and will be advertised on the city's website.

Work on the streets likely will begin in mid- to late August.

"After tonight, it usually takes about two to three weeks getting paperwork together, contracts signed, bonds in place," Bollinger said. "It's just my best guess, but they can probably knock this one out in 60 to 90 days, depending on how aggressive the contractors are."

The repair process will be what's known as mill-and-fill, where the top several inches of asphalt are taken off and new asphalt poured to the previous level.

The other two of the city's annual projects will be following soon, Bollinger said.
