Permanent restrooms and a paved parking lot are the new features Whitey Herzog Stadium is expected to take on throughout the next few years.
During its meeting Monday the Jackson Board of Aldermen unanimously approved modifications to a special use permit that will increase parking from 38 to 118 spaces and add permanent restroom facilities. The gravel parking lot must be paved by April 2014 while the restroom facilities must be completed by April 2013.
Jack Litzelfelner Jr. of the Jackson Area Baseball Association said if the money were available, the work could begin at once. "Raising funds has been an interesting process," he said.
The baseball association oversaw the construction and operates the field.
In addition to the restroom facilities and parking lot, the special-use permit modifications also increases the seating capacity from 150 to 450. Litzelfelner said those additional seats are already in use.
"The reason for that is when we first came up here and started this process we hadn't broken ground yet and didn't have any idea on how many seats we needed," Litzelfelner said.
