JACKSON -- After Mayor Paul Sander vetoed a decision to rezone a parcel of property along West Jackson Boulevard two weeks ago, the Jackson Board of Aldermen on Monday decided to consider issuing the owner a special-use permit instead.

On May 18, the board voted 5-3 to rezone the David Miller property at 1517 W. Jackson Blvd. from residential to commercial so Miller can sell ornamental plants. Sander vetoed the change, saying he wants to wait until plans for the future of Highway 72 are settled.

At the time, Sander said he favored granting Miller a special-use permit instead of rezoning the property. Monday, Alderman Kerry Hoffman requested that the board vote on the special-use permit at its next meeting and extend the time for acting to 30 days.

That vote was unanimous, with Aldermen Val Tuschhoff, David Reiminger and Jack Piepenbrok absent. It made moot a motion on the agenda to approve the rezoning over the mayor's veto.

"When the time comes and we found out about our highway I'll be the first to say, Let's take another look at the zoning," Sander said.

In other business, the board allocated $1,500 toward the fireworks display the Jackson Jaycees are planning for the Fourth of July. Brent Wills, president of the organization, said it intends to spend a total of $7,500 on fireworks this year, the most ever.

A parade is planned for July 3. Other attractions will include a Mr. and Miss Firecracker Contest, live music, hot-air balloons, a magic show, a car show, a race, kiddie rides and a craft area.
