JACKSON -- The Jackson Board of Aldermen approved a list of six asphalt street overlay projects that will be done this month and in October.
The list was compiled by the street committee, who met prior to Tuesday night's board meeting. Paul Sander, chairman of the committee, submitted the list to the aldermen during the regular meeting for their approval.
Sander said the actual amount of work done will depend on time and money. The city has about $40,000 budgeted for the work.
The overlay projects scheduled this fall will include:
Bainbridge Road from the end of new pavement near Donna Drive to the city limits.
North Greensferry Road from the old city limits north to new city limits.
Intersection of Florence and Georgia Streets, east to concrete pavement.
Woodland Drive, widening and overlay of the entire street.
Harmony Lane, two blocks from Highway 61 North.
Union, one block behind Schaper's IGA.
Not included on the list for this fall was Morgan Street, from Main to Oak, which is considered an "optional project" and will be done if money and time is available this fall after the other projects are completed.
The street committee also presented to the board five concrete paving projects that would be done next year as funds permit. The aldermen will discuss the committee's recommendations at its next study session.
The prioritized list of paving work recommended for next year includes:
Adams Street, from High to Oklahoma and Union to Daisy.
Missouri Street, from Main to Jefferson.
Daisy Street, from Adams to Highway 72, plus work at the intersection with Dallas.
South Ohio Street, replacement of the center section of pavement from Jefferson to Madison.
East Washington, from Georgia to Hope and west from Union to Farmington.
Acting City Engineer Rich Bowen said the paving will cost the city about $70 per front foot. The work is financed with a transportation sales tax approved by the voters several years ago. Each year, the tax generates $325,000 to $350,000 for street improvements. Two major street projects that were funded by the tax include Bainbridge Road and Jackson Trails
The street committee also discussed two long-range street projects and recommended the board of aldermen establish a corridor for the two streets. They projects include the extension of East Main from Shawnee to the site of a proposed interchange with Interstate 55, and the extension of Shawnee to connect with Greensferry Road.
The committee members said both are long range projects, but that by going on record now, the board of aldermen will let developers know the city's plans.
In other business, the aldermen approved the repainting of the city's 200,000-gallon elevated water tower, situated near the power plant. The work will be done this fall and winter.
The board adopted an ordinance raising the tipping fee at the city landfill for commercial waste haulers from $8 to $9 per cubic yard. Tipping fees for cars and pickup trucks will remain the same.
The board also:
Approved an ordinance calling for the improvement of White Oak Street.
Authorized installation of street lights in the 600 block of Oak Street, and at the intersection of Oak and Bass.
Accepted the Glendale, Unit One, and Rosewood Estates subdivisions and their sewer systems.
Approved the appointment of Kristen Stoffregen as a volunteer firefighter.
Approved partial payment of $60,900 to P & R Developers for work on the east Jackson water-main project, now about 95 percent complete.
Mayor Carlton Meyer reported that between Aug. 11 and Sept. 4, the city has issued building permits for six new homes and a $100,000 commercial building.
