JACKSON, Mo. -- The Jackson Board of Aldermen Monday night accepted a bid of more than $730,000 on a project designed to move more sewage through the city.

Drury Construction Engineers of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., was the lowest of six bidders for the sewage improvement project. The bid was 25 percent below the engineer's estimate.

This spring the company will begin replacing the lift station in the 3200 block of East Jackson Boulevard and substituting a larger force main from the lift station west 2 miles to a point west of Kimbeland Country Club.

The lift station pumps sewage from the north and east sides of town and is at capacity, Public Works Director Jim Roach said.

Closing one lane of U.S. 61 may be necessary during periods of the construction, Roach said.

"It will be complicated because it's so close to the roadway."

The board said no to a request by Mike and Elizabeth Turbeville to place a vehicle storage business at 402 E. Adams St., an area zoned heavy industrial.

The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of the special-use permit, but because the permit was opposed by more than 30 percent of the adjoining landowners owning 30 percent of the property or more, a two-thirds vote of the aldermen was required for passage.

Only one member of the board, Alderman Joe Bob Baker, voted for approval.
