Insurance company says no to NYC

NEW YORK -- The insurance company for the city firefighters' union has decided not to renew its policy.

Spokesmen for the Uniformed Firefighters Association said the Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. no longer wanted to insure the union because of the risk of terrorist attacks.

Company spokeswoman Mia Benedict said the union's policy would not be renewed in November because it had a joint insurance policy with other unions that no longer met underwriting standards. She would not elaborate.

"Our understanding is that they think Manhattan's too great of a risk and they don't want to insure labor unions anymore," union spokesman Tom Butler said.

Benedict said the company couldn't insure some Manhattan clients because of the risk of terrorist attacks.
