CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Two Mississippi County residents were charged after allegedly being caught concealing contraband in the booking area of the Mississippi County Detention Center.
Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore stated the items were found during the intake of several municipal inmates during Labor Day weekend.
Jason Lee Krubsack, 38, of Bertrand, Missouri, and James Edward Wilson, 62, of Charleston each were charged with delivery/possession of a dangerous item in the county jail, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in the Department of Corrections. Bonds for both men were set at $50,000.
The incident began when corrections officer Faith Altamirano noticed irregular sounds from a holding cell.
Altamirano looked inside the cell and found two new inmates, Wilson and Krubsack, sharing a cigarette while one of the men used a cellphone.
At that time, Altamirano and corrections officer Gerald Douglas entered the cell and seized the phone and cigarette, along with a lighter and pocket knife found allegedly concealed on one of the men.
The officers turned the items over to jail administrator deputy Cory Hutcheson for placement into evidence.
Subsequent interviews conducted by Hutcheson led to finding contraband on Wilson. Once he was placed in the holding cell, Krubsack borrowed the cellphone and lighter.
In a jail setting, a cellphone enables inmates to bypass telephone monitoring systems to engage in activities that may endanger the security of the institution, Moore said in a news release.
