SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- An Ohio man was found dead at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners after what a prison spokesman described as "an altercation with another inmate."

The body of inmate Timothy Baker, 38, was found early Monday in a housing unit at the prison, spokesman Al Quintero said Tuesday. He said the FBI is investigating and that he could release little additional information about Baker or the manner of his death.

James Baker, a nephew, told the Dayton Daily News that when the warden called the slain man's mother to report that her son was dead he told her he had been stabbed.

Quintero said Baker was serving a 72-month sentence for conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute it.

Baker, father of five daughters, was an age group national champion in the discus while competing with a track club in the 1981 Junior Olympics.

The Springfield facility is one of seven prison hospitals in the U.S. Bureau of Prisons system.
