Cape Girardeau police officer Dan Niswonger was listed in stable condition Sunday at the St. Francis Medical Center.

Niswonger was involved in a two-vehicle accident early Saturday while on duty. The officer was southbound on North Sprigg near its intersection with Emerald when he collided with a van, also southbound.

The officer was operating one of the department's motorcycles at the time of the accident, while working traffic for a running event near the Show Me Center. Niswonger was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The driver and a passenger of the van were not injured.

Police said Sunday that the officer was "in pretty good spirits," but remains in the hospital's intensive care unit.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
