A South Bend, Ind., man died in a traffic accident at 3:10 p.m. Saturday on Highway 412, six miles west of Hayti in Pemiscot County.

Dale Freel, 75, was killed when his westbound car crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound tractor-trailer and then struck an eastbound car, the Missouri Highway Patrol said.

A passenger in Freel's car, Dora Freel, 69, of South Bend was injured.

She was taken to Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett and later flown to Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was in stable condition in the hospital's emergency room Saturday night.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Richard Merritt, 43, of Jonesboro, Ark., and the driver of the eastbound car, Richard Gentry, 45, of Caruthersville weren't injured.

Freel was the 76th person killed in traffic accidents in the Troop E area of Southeast Missouri this year.
