CAIRO, Ill. -- Democrat Jeffrey Farris of Olive Branch is unopposed on the primary ballot for his third term as state's attorney in Alexander County. Ditto, Incumbent Democrat Coroner David Barkett.

But both men may face some competition during the general election this fall.

Write-in candidates have emerged for both positions.

The write-in candidates would have to receive one half of one percent of the ballots casts during the 1996 primary election to qualify for a spot on the November 7 general election ballot.

More than 3,600 ballots were cast in the 1996 primary, which would require about 18 to 20 votes for each of the write-in candidates who have filed with the Alexander County Clerk.

Illinois voters will go to the polls March 21, for the primary.

Only six local races are included in primary races in the Illinois counties of Alexander and Union. There are no local primary races in Pulaski County.

Two of primary races are in Alexander County, where incumbent circuit clerk Susan Hileman, who has served in that position 16 years, faces Sharon McGinness for the Democratic general election spot against Republican candidate, Christopher B. Bledsoe, who has no primary opponent.

The only other primary race in the county is for county commissioner, where three challengers face incumbent Charles "Chuck" Bonifield. Challengers are Jesse White, Lewis McRoy Jr., and Robert L. Houston Sr.

Four primary races are on the Union County Ballot, three of them on the Democratic side of the ballot coroner, state's attorney and county commissioner.

Incumbent Christopher K. Wells, who has served eight years as state's attorney, faces a challenge from John Bigler and incumbent county coroner Darryl W. Rendleman will face Everett S. Morgan. Democratic winners have no opponents in the general election.

Four candidates are on the Democratic list for commissioners. They include John D. Garner, Jack Eddleman, Lee Roy Rendleman and Kevin Cox.

Three candidates are on the Republican primary ballot. They are Tom bailey, Larry A. Wheaton and Homer Foskey.

Voters will also cast ballots for Judge of the Circuit Clerk. Three Democratic candidates are o the ballot, H. Wesley Wilkins, William B. Ballard Jr., and Charles "Charlie" Cavaness, who will face Republican Mark M. Boie in the November general election.

Three school bond issues are on the ballot in Union County

* A $1.7 million building bond issue at Cobden, which includes parts of two counties, Union and Jackson, to build and equip a new school building for Cobden Community Unit School District #17i.

* An $850,000 bond issue for a new gymnasium for ?Dongola Unit School District #66 in Union County.
