Ice cream cone now official Mo. dessert

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- It had a rocky road, but the ice cream cone has won Senate approval to become Missouri's official dessert.

Senators passed the ice cream cone legislation by a 24-10 vote Thursday. The bill now heads to the House.

The edible ice cream cone made its American debut at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. It's being promoted in 2008 by students who lobbied lawmakers with an ice cream social at the Capitol.

But some senators remained cool to the idea.

Sen. Kevin Engler, of Farmington, said it's stupid for lawmakers to declare an official dessert when there are more important issues to debate.

Other senators also were reluctant to add to Missouri's two dozen official symbols.
