Someone broke into the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri early Wednesday and stole a donation jar, according to one of the organization's officials.
Around 5:30 a.m., someone attempted to get through one of the windows at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri's shelter at 2536 Boutin Drive, said Requi Salter, who sits on the organization's board of directors. When the burglar was unsuccessful in getting in the window, they broke through a window in the cat room, Salter said.
Once inside, the burglar took the organization's donation jar, Salter said. The alarm went off, and that may have deterred the person or people from taking anything else, Salter said. No animals were harmed.
Salter estimates there was $100 in change in the donation jar.
Police arrived shortly after the alarm sounded, but did not find signs of a break-in, police spokesman Darin Hickey said. An employee noticed the broken window around 8 a.m., Hickey said.
Police collected evidence and will examine it for fingerprints, Hickey said. There are no suspects, and no arrests have been made.
