Humane Society gets custody of 102 dogs

ST. LOUIS -- A judge has granted custody of 102 dogs taken from an alleged Daviess County puppy mill to the Humane Society of Missouri.

A Jackson County judge made the ruling Thursday. The Humane Society is caring for the dogs in St. Louis. Some will be put up for adoption next week. Those interested in adopting are encouraged to visit the Humane Society website, www.hsmo.org.

On March 31, authorities went to a northwest Missouri home near Winston, amid reports of up to 200 dogs and three primates at the property.

By the time they arrived, most of the animals had been removed. But 102 of the dogs were eventually turned in to authorities. The Humane Society originally reported 92 had been found. The USDA recovered the three primates.
