ST. LOUIS -- Missouri and Illinois lawmakers couldn't agree on what to name a new river bridge at St. Louis, so Congress is moving ahead to settle the divide.

The U.S. House approved a compromise Tuesday that would name the span the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Missouri lawmakers had sought to name it after Musial, the late Cardinals baseball great. Their Illinois counterparts had wanted to name it after military veterans.

The resolution heads to the U.S. Senate.

Musial was a Hall of Famer and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also was a Navy veteran of World War II. He died in January at age 92.

The four-lane bridge is expected to open to traffic early next year.
