House fire in Cape Girardeau

Cape Girardeau firefighters battled a suspected electrial fire that occurred at a house Monday night at 815 S. Benton St.

The fire occurred around 5 p.m., said Eric Gardner, who was inside at the time it began.

The lights had gone out suddenly, Gardner said, and he had gone to check the fuse box when he heard a scream from upstairs.

A fire had started in an outlet of one of the kids bedrooms, Gardner said.

The fire knocked a wall down in the house, and the family would not be able to stay there tonight, said Veronica Gardner.
