Some new amenities have been added at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.
Betty Martin, the library’s director, said the facility recently acquired five Wi-Fi hotspot devices that can be checked out by patrons for up to three weeks at a time.
“They’re about the size of a cellphone, but thicker,” she said.
Up to five devices can connect to the hotspots at once; all a user has to do is plug the hotspot number into a phone, tablet or laptop to be able to connect to the internet. The hotspots primarily work off Sprint and Verizon cell towers.
They’re especially helpful for patrons who can’t afford to pay for regular access through an internet service provider. Martin said it keeps them from having to come to the library to use its computers for job searches or to remain in touch with friends and family.
Already, 40 holds have been placed on the devices so people can pick them up when it’s their turn.
“We are trying to purchase some more to accommodate the need,” she said.
Another new development at the library is being able to provide passport services for patrons who plan to travel internationally.
The library is now a passport acceptance facility with five certified agents on staff who can accept applications, help people with documents they need to submit and take passport photos.
“We send (the applications) off for people, and they get their passports in the mail,” she said.
Previously, the only place that could be done was at the local post office, which has shorter hours than the library.
The library is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
“People can come up to an hour before we close, because (the process) takes a little time,” Martin said.
