CHAFFEE -- On July 17, Chaffee General Hospital filed for bankruptcy, leaving many business seeing red.

The most detrimental blow was to those holding unsecured notes. Unsecured notes are those businesses or individuals who hold no collateral or claims in a bankruptcy case.

Suffering the largest losses from the Chaffee suit are: Brim Healthcare Inc., consultan~t fee/attorney for settlement, $27,590.93; Blue Cross and Blue Shield, employee insurance, $25,804.20; and Curtin Matheson Scientific, lab supplies, $21,145.

Local losses were: Cape Girardeau Winair Supply, plumbing supplies, $1,209.14; Earley, Janssen, Begley & Company of Cape Girardeau, accounting, $1,376.50; Beaver Janitorial of Sikeston housekeeping supplies, $383.23; Crown Pest Control of Scott City, $60.70; City of Chaffee, water $250; Imperial Floor Coverings miscellaneous, $126.20; Halter Gas Co. of Oran, fuel, $100.46.

For those secured creditors, the Chaffee Hospital bankruptcy remains simply a bad investment. Secured creditors are those who will receive all or a portion of their money as soon as assets have been liquidated.

Secured creditors are First Midwest Bank of Chaffee and Towers Financial Corp. of Cape Girardeau.
