WILDWOOD, Mo. -- A horse was saved after falling through the ice of a pond in a St. Louis suburb.
The colt named Kid escaped the pond about 7 p.m. Saturday with the help of firefighters and not-for-profit MERS Large Animal Rescue.
Kid had broken through fencing of his Wildwood property before he entered the freezing water. Rescuers estimate the horse was in the pond about 30 minutes before his owner found him.
About 15 firefighters used straps, ropes and canvas tarp to free the colt.
Metro West Fire Protection District firefighter Matt Coppin said Kid walked feet from the pond but collapsed in exhaustion.
MERS gave him warm fluid and a heat blanket. Kid was in stable condition two hours later.
