Hopper Road to close for construction work

Hopper Road in Cape Girardeau near the Interstate 55 overpass will be closed to traffic for construction work, starting today.

The road is being closed so work can begin on construction of the extension of Veterans Memorial Drive from Scenic Drive to Hopper Road.

Construction crews will begin removing a section of Hopper Road this week, city officials said.

Motorists should avoid driving through barricades, officials said. Detour signs will be posted.

That section of Hopper Road will remain closed throughout the duration of the project, which is not expected to be completed until fall.

The city originally closed the road in early May, but reopened it to traffic while awaiting the scheduling of utility-relocation work for the project.
