Southeast Missouri State University will accept nominations until Oct. 15 for recipients of a university honorary doctoral degree and Southeast's Vandiver Show Me State award.
The degree and award will be presented at spring commencement exercises next May.
"The honorary degree is to be awarded for distinguished achievement, accomplishment or service that is recognized by peers in the field and by a broader spectrum of society," said Dr. John Hinni, chairman of the honorary degree committee and dean of the School of University Studies.
Southeast's policy states that "the recipients may be recognized for their contributions in such fields as teaching, scholarship, creative endeavor, public service, philanthropy, the professions, and business and industry."
People who meet the criteria may be nominated for an honorary degree, with the exception of active members of the faculty and staff at Southeast, currently enrolled students, active candidates for public office and current members of the Board of Regents.
An honorary degree is one of the most prestigious awards in higher education.
In addition to the university's honorary degree, the Board of Regents last February created the Vandiver Show Me State Award, to be presented to leaders in various fields and citizens whose achievements have contributed to the school, the region and/or the state of Missouri but who do not easily fit the categories of those eligible for honorary degrees.
Corporate entities and individuals are eligible for the award.
Nominations should include detailed information about the nominee sufficient to demonstrate that the individual's qualifications are appropriate for an honorary degree or the Vandiver Award.
They should also state the type of degree for which the individual is being nominated.
Nominations should be sent to Dr. John Hinni, chairman, honorary degree committee, School of University Studies, 210 Memorial Hall, Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63701.
