A homeless woman was charged with robbery after being accused of stealing beef jerky from a Cape Girardeau convenience store.

Debra Jane Winters, 50, was charged with second-degree robbery. It is a class B felony that carries a minimum sentence of five years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

She was arrested March 2 after a traffic stop by Cape Girardeau police, but the arrest warrant was filed Saturday.

A clerk at Huck’s Convenience Store saw Winters take beef jerky and confronted her outside the store, according to a probable-cause statement filed by Cape Girardeau police officer R.W. Rahn.

Winters said she would hit the clerk if she kept “messing” with her, then got into her car to leave. The clerk noted Winters’ license-plate information and told Winters she was calling the police, Rahn wrote.

“Go ahead and call; they won’t find me,” Winters said, according to Rahn’s report.

Rahn reported surveillance video captured images of Winters taking the jerky.

Winters’ bond is set at $5,000 cash or surety.
