MARBLE HILL -- Incumbent Republican Diane Holzum turned back a bid of challenger Beverly A. Johnson to remain in the running for Bollinger County clerk.
Holzum defeated Johnson, 650 to 530, to become the Republican candidate in the November general election. She will face Democrat Margie Cook Gaines, who received 692 Democratic votes Tuesday.
Republican Jerry V. Marquis and Democrat Bob Anderson emerged winners for county collector. They will face each other in November.
Marquis led all candidates in the collector's race, with 512 votes, defeating two Republicans in Tuesday's primary. Adrian Shell finished second on the GOP ticket, with 368 votes, and Kimberly Fulbright Devenport had 268.
Anderson, who collected 420 votes, also had to defeat two other candidates in the Democratic primary. Nick Bollinger received 364 votes and Charles Angel 221. Incumbent Democrat Dale Bollinger did not seek re-election.
A total of 2,306 voters turned out in Bollinger County Tuesday.
Incumbent Junior E. Cook of Scopus had to withstand the challenge of Joyce Long in the Democratic race for 2nd District associate commissioner. He received 333 votes to Long's 279. Cook will face Republican Sharon K. Smith, who received 368 Democratic votes.
Jay Thompson led the four candidates in the 8th District democratic congressional primary, with 384 votes. Other candidates and votes were Thad Bullock, 199; Don Hager, 123; and Gene Curtis, 96.
Voters in Bollinger County opposed the Amendment 4 bond issue almost by two to one. The vote was 1,314 against and 699 for.
