Labor Day weekend is celebrated by many as the end of summer. Today through Saturday, people who want to get outside can also shop as about 65 miles of yard sales will be open for the Highway 61 Yard Sale. The sale is set to begin at the municipal courthouse in Jackson and stretch north to Bloomsdale, Mo.
"Those attending can expect to find one of the unique yard sales they've ever seen," organizer Jonathan Khourie said. "You will find everything from custom choppers to custom-built outhouses and handmade turkey calls, antiques to traditional yard sale items and everything in between."
Anyone wishing to sell simply needs a place to set up along the route. There is no registration fee. The 2011 sale had an estimated 350-plus vendors. According to Khourie, the Highway 61 Yard Sale was conceived by a couple of people who were discussing ideas that would bring commerce and travelers back to U.S. 61. Shoppers are encouraged to visit attractions and eateries along the way. Organizers urge participants to be mindful and careful of other shoppers and drivers.
"We want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe experience," Khourie said.
The sale is sponsored by the Jackson and Perryville, Mo., chambers of commerce, TG Missouri Corp., KFVS12, Kelly Services, All-Star Webs and Outlaw Hobbies.
