Strong winds, gusting up to 39 miles per hour caused a portion of the back porch roof of the historic Glenn House to collapse sometime Saturday morning.
There was no one around when it happened, said the Glenn House director, Beverly Daniel. The damage was discovered Saturday afternoon.
"We have been having problems with the porch for some time," Daniel said. "The porch had sustained water damage, which caused some of the wood to rot. That has weakened the timbers over a period of time."
Daniel said one of the corner posts of the roof and some railings were blown down by the wind. "I'm afraid if we don't make some immediate repairs, the rest of the roof will come down," she said. "We're appealing for volunteers and funds to repair the porch as soon as possible."
Daniel said anyone who would like to assist in the porch repairs or make a donation for materials can call the Glenn House, 334-1177, after noon today.
