High temperatures Friday and Saturday break records in Cape Girardeau

A new high temperature record was set Friday with a reading of 107 degrees at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.

The reading shattered the old record for the date, 103 degrees, recorded in 1969, according to National Weather Service data. A high of 103 was also marked in local records on this date in 1952. Initial reports had put Friday's high at 106 degrees, but revised data had the peak temperature one degree higher.

Saturday's high temperature of 105 degrees in Cape Girardeau broke the previous record high for the date, set in 1952.

That year, the temperature reached 102, according to local records.

The previous record of 102 was tied on this date in 1969.

Saturday's record high temperature was recorded at 1:43 p.m. At the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.

An excessive heat warning remained in effect for most of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois through 6 p.m. Monday.

Temperatures were forecast to continue to top out in the triple digits through the weekend and into next week.
