Official observed temperatures hit 99 degrees Thursday afternoon, topping the official high from Wednesday, 98 degrees. The measurements were taken by the National Weather Service's official weather recording site at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.
Thursday's high was observed at 2:54 p.m.
Cape Girardeau highs have been in the 90s since Aug. 1, when the observed airport temperature reached 94 -- the coolest day of the month so far. Measurements taken by the Southeast Missourian in downtown Cape Girardeau reach 100 degrees Wednesday.
Little relief is in sight, with highs expected to stay at least in the mid-90s for the next week. At the same time, little rain has fallen, and none is forecast for the next week other than the occasional isolated shower. A heat advisory will expire at 7 p.m. today, but the National Weather Service said heat index values will remain above 100 at least through Wednesday.
