High-speed Internet company cutting another 7,000 jobs

DENVER -- Qwest Communications International Inc. said last week it will cut 7,000 more jobs by mid-2002, citing a drop in business stemming from the deteriorating economy.

The move will bring its work force to 55,000.

Qwest supplies high-speed Internet access, and also provides local telephone service, through last year's merger with U S West.

The cuts come on top of 4,000 announced in September. When the cutbacks are completed, Qwest will have reduced its work force by 17 percent.

Within Qwest's 14-state region, fewer retail customers are adding second lines to their homes or moving and requesting new service.
