Cape Girardeau and Illinois police were sent on a high-speed chase Wednesday that ended with their guns drawn in a trailer park.
The chase started Wednesday afternoon after officers saw a suspect in a vehicle that matched the description of a man from a previous incident earlier in the day in which university police officers were trying to make contact with several men who were "acting suspicious," said Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman Darin Hickey.
When a city police officer attempted to stop a Dodge Charger one of those men was in, the driver fled and was pursued by police in south Cape Girardeau. The Charger hit another vehicle at the corner of South Lorimier and Independence streets, although the driver was not hurt. Police lost sight of the Charger for a period but then learned it had sped across the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge into Illinois, Hickey said.
The chase started in Cape Girardeau and ended at a trailer park in East Cape Girardeau, Ill. Police surrounded a trailer on Trea Drive with a damaged Dodge Charger outside with guns drawn.
Just after 5 p.m. Cape Girardeau police, Alexander County sheriff's deputies and Illinois State Police were looking for a suspect in fields and outbuildings in the area. No one was found in the trailer park. Police continued to look into the evening, and Hickey said the investigation is ongoing.
