High school teacher named assistant principal at Jackson middle school

The Jackson School District announced Wednesday who will fill the role of middle school assistant principal starting with the next school year.

Janelle Pope was selected by the school board during a closed-session meeting Tuesday night. Pope is currently a language arts teacher at Jackson High School and has been employed by the district for 10 years.

The school's current assistant principal, Christa Turner, will leave the position for a new job in the Cape Girardeau School District when she assumes the role of Jefferson Elementary principal. That school's principal, Mark Cook, is retiring.

Jackson Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rita Fisher said Pope was chosen from a large field of applicants for her good relationships with students and communication skills. Fisher also said Pope has been involved on leadership teams for professional learning communities while at the high school.

Pope holds a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University and a master's degree in school administration from William Woods University.
