An excessive heat warning issued for Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois has been extended through 7 p.m. Sunday. An excessive heat warning issued for Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois has been extended through 7 p.m. Sunday.

The warning was initially in effect through 7 p.m. Saturday, but has now been extended, as the National Weather Service is expecting oppressive heat and humidity to continue blanketing the area on Sunday.

Heat indexes will be 105 to 120, though they could decrease slightly over the weekend, but not enough to prevent extension of the warning, the weather service said in its new warning.

The high heat and humidity is being exacerbated by high nighttime lows at or above 75 degrees, the weather service said.
