The heat index broke 100 degrees Tuesday afternoon at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.
The National Weather Service measured a high temperature of 93 degrees and a 101-degree heat index at 3:53 p.m. Tuesday. The weather service in a statement said temperatures in the 90s and high humidity will produce a heat index of about 100 degrees for Southeast Missouri and the surrounding region today, as well. Today's high is forecast at 94 degrees at Cape Girardeau.
Tuesday's high falls short of the record of 100 degrees, set in 1977, but is above the normal high of 86 degrees.
