The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Southeast Missouri and the surrounding region today for the second straight day as temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 90s.

The advisory is in effect from 1 to 7 p.m. today. High temperatures are expected to combine with high humidity to create a "feels-like" temperature of 105 degrees or more. This kind of heat can be extremely dangerous to children, the elderly and people with health problems.

At 10:53 a.m., the temperature was 88 degrees at the weather service's Cape Girardeau Regional Airport observation station, and the heat index was 98 degrees. Today's high is expected to reach 97 degrees.

An excessive heat warning is in effect for areas north and west of Southeast Missouri, with the heat index expected to reach 110 degrees or more in those areas.

A heat advisory was in effect Monday, but the high only reached 91 degrees at the Cape Girardeau airport.

Temperatures are expected to cool on Wednesday, with a forecast high of 93 degrees at Cape Girardeau.
