Camelot will come to Cape Girardeau March 17 when the local American Cancer Society opens the doors for its annual gala.

"Return to Camelot" was chosen as the theme for the 2001 gala, the organization's largest fund raiser.

Although decorations and other plans are in the works, organizers say guests can expect a setting of castles, moats, knights and Camelot-influenced surroundings.

The gala, which takes place at the Show Me Center, will feature dinner by Rebecca Sharp, music by Infinity, dancing, a silent auction and a diamond giveaway.

Proceeds from the gala are used for research and cancer programs. Organizers hope to raise at least $65,000. This year, the gala raised $30,000.

Gala tickets are $150 a couple.

Marcia Schlueter, one of the gala organizers, said the Camelot theme was chosen because of the era's reputation as a magical time and place.

"We're playing off the idea that Camelot was considered the perfect place, the perfect world," she said. "With all the cancer research that is going on, we're hoping that we will have the perfect world."

Amy Jones, another gala organizer, said the Cancer Society is looking for corporate sponsors and items for the silent auction. Two Lasik eye surgeries were donated to last year's auction.

For information about the gala or donations, call the American Cancer Society office at 334-9197.
