A Tamms, Ill., man was seriously injured early Sunday morning when his pickup hit a semi tanker truck head-on in Alexander County.

Nicholas A. Santa Maria, 21, was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, where he was treated for several broken bones.

The accident occurred on Illinois Route 3, at the intersection of Jaco City Road. According to the Illinois State Police, Santa Maria was traveling southbound when his truck crossed the center line striking the semi tanker.

Duff G. Bishop, 36, of Dexter, Mo., was driving the semi tanker and was not injured.

Arrests are pending against Santa Maria for DUI and improper lane usage.
