The best thing to cool down on a hot summer day is Hawaiian Snow, said Howard Kinder, owner of Burger Tyme fast-food restaurant, 1865 Broadway. Kinder opened his Hawaiian Snow business just over two weeks ago.
"Our product is not a traditional snow cone ... It's totally different. Our machine creates a miniature snow storm. It's shaved ice, and not chipped ice," explained Kinder. "We also use a corn-based syrup rather than water based which really sticks to the ice."
Kinder said he is the first one in the area to offer the Hawaiian Snow product.
"It's gone over well, really better than we anticipated," he said.
Manager of the Hawaiian Snow operation is Ron Davis.
Hawaiian Snow comes now comes in 71 flavors, Kinder said, including a new sugar-free cola flavor.
Some of the most popular flavors are Bart Simpson and Ninja Turtles, which are created by a mixture of flavors. "All of our daiquiri flavors are very popular as is strawberry short cake," he said. "The most popular `regular' flavor is cherry."
But out of the 71 flavors, very few remain idle, he said.
The facility is located in a new 8'x10' structure along Caruthers Street. Several picnic tables and benches are available for customers.
Davis pointed out: "Hawaiian Ice is very popular in the South and has been well-received here." The cones are available in a 12 oz. small size for $1, and a 16 oz. large size for $1.50.
"We anticipate that it will be a strictly a seasonable product, but who knows?" said Kinder. "With our mild winters, we may stay open longer."
Kinder opened Burger Tyme a year ago. Both Burger Tyme and Hawaiian Snow operate 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
