Hard work paid off for Haulin' Butt Barbecue, the team declared the grand champion at the 11th annual Cape BBQ Fest at Arena Park on Saturday.
"We've been working hard for five years," said Kenny Strop, head cook for the team. "We figured it out through trial and error. We cook all year-round. It's a family thing."
The requirement for grand champion was placing first or second in four out of six categories. As grand champion, the team won $250 and the Charles E. Knote memorial trophy.
Thirty-seven teams, some occupying more than one booth and most with more than one smoker grill, competed. Booths were scattered across Arena Park for the serious side of the competition. Friday's event awarded showmanship.
Displayed in front of the Davis Farms booth from McClure, Ill., was an array of trophies, six in the beef kabob category won at previous competitions, followed by tables for supporters and a trailer in the rear.
Inside the trailer, Sue and Bill Agne prepared their pork rib entry. Sue did the prep work and garnish while Bill cooked. The team, which also includes Marty and Drew Davis and David Kinscherff, began competing in 1994.
"We have a secret recipe for kabobs," Bill Agne said. "We never practice. If you practice it, you screw it up."
Practice or not, winning still takes some luck.
"What one judge might like another may not," he said.
