ORIOLE -- The Happy Hollow Tavern at Oriole in Cape Girardeau County burned Thursday morning.
James Hanks, fire chief for East County Fire Protection District, said the building was a total loss. Firefighters were able to save a mobile home next to the building.
When volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene a little after 7 a.m., the building was fully engulfed in flames, and electric lines into the business were sparking.
The danger of falling electrical lines hampered firefighters initially. "If the lines had fallen on dry ground it wouldn't be as bad," Hanks explained. "But the ground is wet and icy. If the lines fall here, the electricity can travel anywhere."
The electric company cut power to the building.
Hanks said firefighters tapped Indian creek about 500 yards behind the tavern. Using portable pumps, creek water was used to fight the fire.
"This enabled us not to have to take tankers on the icy roads," Hanks said. In fact, Hanks said navigating the icy roads to arrive at the business on Route Y was treacherous.
Some 18 to 20 volunteer firefighters turned out along with the Salvation Army mobile canteen. The Salvation Army provides drinks and food for firefighters at fires in the area.
"We really appreciate their help," Hanks said. "We're cold and wet and hungry, but we can't leave until the job's done. We appreciate them being here, and if anyone can donate to their cause I think they should."
