Motorists who made their way through Southeast Missouri for the 100-Mile Yard Sale that started last week began to see sale signs Sunday, when many vendors began offering items for half off.
While some vendors were hoping to clear out their inventory Sunday, others packed up their yard sale treasures Saturday, leaving larger distances between sales near Delta, Dutchtown and Jackson the remainder of Memorial Day weekend.
In Delta on Sunday, behind the Corner Pocket Bar and Grill, Regina Hardison was beginning to mark down many of her items, including books, clothes, kitchen utensils and miscellaneous trinkets.
"It was superbusy here Thursday. On Friday, I sold about a third of what I did Thursday," she said. "Saturday was about the same." All in all, Hardison enjoyed her first 100-Mile Yard Sale experience. She's been shopping local auctions for the last year, she said, in order to gather items for the sale.
"I didn't know what to expect," Hardison said.
Stan Turner, of Millersville, said traffic was heavy Thursday through Saturday by his location at the intersection of Highway 25 and Highway 77 a few miles from Delta. Sales, however, weren't as good as they've been in past years, Turner said.
"There's a lot of people shopping, but sales are down a little bit," said Turner, who was selling mostly miscellaneous kitchenware. "It's been bumper-to-bumper traffic for most of the weekend."
At the same location, vendor Charlie Brown said shoppers were interested in his old Nintendo video games and retro baseball hats. Brown, in his third year participating in the sale, said he started seeing motorists looking for sales before the yard sale officially began.
"We started setting up Wednesday, and we've pretty much been swamped since then," he said. "It seems like there's more and more people every year."
