JERUSALEM (AP) -- A suspected Palestinian militant disguised as an Israeli soldier opened fire on travelers at a bus station Thursday, killing two Israelis and wounding 10 before being shot dead, police said.

The attack occurred in the central Israeli town of Afula, which has been the scene of several bombing attacks by Islamic militants in recent years.

There were conflicting reports on whether the assailant arrived at the bus station by bus or on foot. Police said he fired wildly in all directions before two policemen shot him to death. Police said two Israelis in the station were killed but gave no details.

Bus driver Michael Harel said he was making a phone call at the Afula station when he saw the assailant opening fire near his bus. "The moment I went to call, I heard a series of shots at a murderous pace. There was a panic and everybody started to run," Harel told Israel radio.

"He was standing at the end of my bus and shooting at a group of soldiers and into my bus. He was disguised as a soldier," Harel said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
