Cpl. Krauss is the son of Jerry and Laverne Krauss of Perryville and the grandson of Mabel Guth of Jackson.
He graduated from Perryville High School in 1987 and joined the Marines in 1988.
After completing basic training, he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
At the time he was deployed to Saudi Arabia on Dec. 12, he was stationed at Camp LeJuene, N.C.

His grandmother said she has received two letters from him in the past week, both written at least 15 days before. "He said he really likes it when people write to him," she said.
