Matulewic is the son of Patrick and Diane Scully of Jackson and Bob Matulewic of St. Louis.
He graduated from Jackson High School where he was co-captain of the football team and a member of the wrestling team.
He is a student at Southeast Missouri State University, where he's a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the rugby team.
He is majoring in criminal justice.

Matulewic's reserve unit was activated on Nov. 30 and he was deployed to Saudi Arabia on Dec. 30, after training at Camp Lejeune, N.C. His parents say he would especially like to receive letters from former classmates, teachers and coaches at Jackson, and from fraternity brothers and rugby team members at Southeast.
