Seaman Harper is the son of Barbara Harper of Cape Girardeau. He graduated from Meadow Heights High School in 1987 and attended Cape public schools through the eighth grade.

He joined the Navy in May, 1989.

He is aboard an amphibious assault vehicle, and his mother thinks the vessel is now in the Persian Bulf. It was previously anchored in the Gulf of Oman.

"He has really kept his spirits up and sounds very optimistic when I talk to him." his mother said. "He likes music and now has a Walkman. He also loves mail of any kind, cards and letters. He told me mail is what keeps them sane."
