Spec. Abernathy is the son of Kelly and Liz Abernathy of Jackson.
He graduated from Jackson High School in 1985 and joined the army in 1987. He was stationed in Panama during the invasion of Panama.
After returning, he was stationed with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. for one month before being deployed to Saudi Arabia on Aug. 15.
He is married to the former Debbie Kinder of Jackson, who now resides in Fayetteville, N.C. In his letters and phone call home, he says he appreciates the letters and care packages friends and relatives have sent, and urges them to send more, says his wife.
