The Southeast Missouri Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder chapter has honored 16 area educators.
Attention disorders, which affect up to 10 percent of schoolchildren and adults, often are impulsive, inattentive and hyperactive.
Often difficult to diagnose, attention deficit may present social, psychological and educational problems.
The first Special Educators awards were presented to educators and counselors in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson area.
Those honored received certificates, gifts and copies of the CHADD Educator's Resource Guide for their schools.
Recipients were Jack Mann, Nell Holcomb principal; Sally Morrison, Cape Central Junior High teacher; Becky Hicks, May Greene Elementary teacher; Mary Green, Jackson High School teacher; Carole Baugh and Andrea Sachse, Jackson Westlane Elementary teachers; and Donna Stephens, Howard Lewis and Candi Brazil, Orchard Elementary in Jackson teachers.
School counselors honored were Pat Trickey, Cape Central High School; Marsha Clark, Orchard Elementary; and Judy Statler, West Lane Elementary.
Other area professionals honored were Jo Boyer, executive coordinator of the Caring Communities in Cape Girardeau; Susan Ernst, Southeast Missouri Area M-PACT; Marie Walker, social worker with the Division of Family Service who works with the Caring Communities program at May Greene Elementary; and Gloria Miller, a Community Counseling Center therapist who also works with the Caring Communities program at May Greene.
