BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- An Illinois fire department says it will be better prepared to help rescue dogs and cats from house fires.

A pet advocacy group has donated several specially-fitted oxygen masks to the Belleville Fire Department.

Fire officials had been using traditional masks for humans to revive pets.

The advocacy group is called Helping Animals Find Loving Owners. It plans to donate similar masks to Illinois fire departments in Freeburg, Millstadt and East St. Louis as well.

The group's president said rescued pets often suffer from smoke inhalation, not burns.

The masks come in three sizes and cost about $55 each.
