Investigators on Thursday afternoon were trying to determine why a 73-year-old woman drove off North Kingshighway and plowed through a streetlight, two barbecue grills, a fence and a car before her car came to rest in a wooded area about 500 feet from where it left the road. Witnesses told investigators the unidentified driver was southbound in a silver-colored Chevrolet Lumina in the 1900 block of North Kingshighway about 1:30 p.m., when for no apparent reason it ran off the west side of the road and barreled through a neighborhood, where it struck a Hyundai Elantra, Cape Girardeau police officer Jay Freeman said. The driver was disoriented, Freeman said. An ambulance transported her to Saint Francis Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, Freeman said.
