GORDONVILLE -- Sandy Bishop is getting used to her new quarters.

Bishop, postmaster at the Gordonville post office, recently moved into the new post office at 5840 Missouri Highway 25.

"We've been here a week now," said Bishop, who has more than 16 years experience with the U.S. Postal Service, two of them at Gordonville. "The new post office is a wonderful addition to our community."

The post office has plenty of off-street paved parking, is handicapped accessible and has a larger lobby than the previous post office, which was in the former Bank of Gordonville that was built in 1904, said Bishop.

"The new post office will benefit our customers." said Bishop. "It has adequate lock-box facilities -- a total of 220 post office boxes available 24 hours a day -- inside writing desks and a full-service counter."

The new, modular-type structure's interior dimensions are 17 feet 9 inches wide by 28 feet long, about 497 square feet.

"We're seeing a lot of new faces here," said Bishop. "We were kind of off the beaten path before. Now we're right in the middle of things."

The former post office was in the old bank building for 37 years. The bank building is at 903 State Highway Z.

The bank moved operations from its Gordonville location in 1961. At that time the post office moved from a smaller building next door into the vacated bank space.

The old facility had no running water and was poorly insulated, said Bishop. "Here we have a nice building, and it has central air conditioning."

Bishop comes from a post office family. Bishop's husband, Danny Bishop, is postmaster at Advance; her mother, Glenda Yount, is postmaster at Leopold; and her father, George Yount, previously worked at a post office as a postmaster replacement at Zalma.
