OLIVE BRANCH, Ill. -- More than 750,000 Canada geese are wintering in the Southern Illinois area, with almost a quarter-million of the northern honkers at the Horseshoe Lake Wildlife Refuge.
During the latest census of geese in Southern Illinois, conducted earlier this week, Illinois Department of Conservation officials counted more than 220,000 geese in the Horseshoe Lake area.
it was estimated that more than 760,000 geese were in the area, with another 62,000 in nearby Ballard County (Ky.) for a total of 820,000 in Southern Illinois and West Kentucky.
The count, by areas:
220,000 geese in the Horseshoe Lake area of Alexander County.
90,000 in the Crab Orchard Lake areas of Jackson and Williamson counties.
130,000 in the Union County Wildlife Refuge area.
136,000 in the Rend Lake Area.
82,000 in other Southern Illinois areas.
62,000 in Ballard County.
